FanPulse Week 9 Top 25 — LSU looks like crap and surges into top spot; Alabama drops to 2nd

Excellent.

It took a while for even the blogosphere to recognize that resume matters, but we finally got there: LSU now claims the top spot. You can debate the questionable merit of wins over one dimensional and shaky Florida and Auburn teams all you want — and you’re free to shade that 45-38 grotesquery over 5-3 Texas — but it is still a better resume than what Alabama or Ohio State has pieced together. So, you can’t hate this too much. The more rat poison the better.

Thus, the LSU Tigers move into the top spot in this week’s FanPulse Top 25. And this happened despite a week where Alabama received more first place votes than LSU, where Joe Burrow looked his shakiest, where Alabama looked its best, and where the Buckeyes looked nigh-invincible.

Excellent.

As for the rest of the Top 25, Clemson remains at No. 4 for...reasons of ________. I’ve got nothing: Poll inertia is a helluva drug. In the time-honored tradition of “this team is undefeated, so they have to be good” we have Baylor checking in at No. 10 and Minnesota at No. 13., teams with the 73rd and 75th SOS respectively. But don’t laugh too much — Alabama’s first half 2019 SOS was 64th. Interestingly, Sagarin doesn’t care too much for LSU’s wins either, tabbing them at 57th on the ole SOS. Jeff’s top spot? The Ohio State Buckeyes, with the No 17 SOS. Jeff at least has eyeballs, it seems.

Notre Dame suffers its worst loss to Michigan ever, quits for a half, and drops to just 15th. That is two spots ahead of the team that defenestrated them, as Michigan lands at No. 17. Michigan’s losses were honorable ones too and both were on the road as well: No. 5 Penn State and No. 19 Wisconsin. There’s no reason for the Irish to be ahead here. None.

Florida and Georgia find themselves at No. 6 and No. 7 on the eve of the Cocktail Party. And, No. 5 Penn State travels to the Twin Cities this week to play the undefeated Gophers. On top of all that, No. 14 SMU travels to the Liberty Bowl for a culture clash with the No. 23 Memphis Tigers. Winner will take the AAC West and have an inside track on the New Year’s Six Bowl...if they can get past UCF or No. 16 Cincinnati. And No. 22 Boise is just sitting there, demanding to be noticed. #Choose901.

So, we’ve a big week ahead and a lot of shakeup in the poll behind us. But, still, it’s probably not as much change as there needed to be, eh?

Here’s the Top 25.
