The Heisman Case: Alabama QB Mac Jones vs. LSU QB Joe Burrow

It’s close, but with Mac’s numbers you have to like his chances.

NCAA Football: Alabama at Auburn John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Since Alabama’s season is officially over we can now turn to the Heisman race, where Mac Jones, with his all-time record 210.93 passer rating as the Crimson Tide starting quarterback, anxiously awaits the results of the voting.

Mac’s performance as the QB1 of the explosive Alabama attack is just staggering. He has completed 74% of his passes at a remarkable clip of 11.6 yards per attempt. Most impressively, he has thrown a touchdown pass for every 7.3 attempts, another all-time record.

His main competition is LSU QB Joe Burrow, and it is a tight race. Burrow actually has a slightly higher completion percentage at 78.3%, but his passer rating lags behind at only 203, mostly thanks to his still solid 10.9 yards per attempt. Joe has been a bit better at protecting the football with an interception for every 66 attempts vs one for every 36 for Mac, but his TD rate trails at one for every 9.1 passes.

Against the Auburn Tigers, who boast the best defense faced by either player this season, Jones really shined. Playing on the road, he completed 67% of his attempts for 335 yards and four touchdown passes. He did throw two costly interceptions, but even with those baked in he produced a strong 162.4 passer rating, and added another 32 yards on the ground in 8 carries. Burrow, playing in the friendly confines of his home stadium, dinked and dunked his way to 321 yards on 42 attempts for a 143 rating, with one touchdown and one interception. He also added 31 rushing yards, but it took him 13 carries to get them.
