It’s good to be playing at home again but who made this schedule? The Iron (3-0) will play their fourth game of the season and third in the friendly confines of Legion Field. They host Steve Spurrier and the Orlando Apollos next week then it’s on the road for four of the last five games. But let’s worry about this week.
Commanders (1-2):
COACH
Former Crimson Tide DB Mike Riley is head coach of San Antonio. He is better known as the long-time Oregon State coach who laid a big egg at Nebraska. He also coached the Chargers for three seasons as well as some time with the CFL and WLAF (aka NFL Europe).
Former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe is DC.
OFFENSE
Once upon a time, Logan Woodside [50-98, 629 yards, 2 TD, 5 INT] was the back-up QB to Alabama transfer Phillip Ely. He would go on to accumulate 10,514 yards and 93 TDs at Toledo from 2013-2017. He was drafted last April by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round but waived before the season began. Only 24, he has only three professional games under his belt.
RB Kenneth Farrow [36-138, 2 TD] played his college ball for Houston and has a handful of NFL carries for the Chargers in 2016. David Cobb [19-64, 0] was a fifth round pick of the Titans in 2015 and has bounced around a few practice squads and the CFL. Former Texas A&M Aggie Trey Williams [7-75, 0] is on the team as well.
Mekale McKay [11-207, 1 TD] is the leading receiver. Remember former Houston Cougars QB Greg Ward, Jr. who some ill-advised wonks hyped for the Heisman a few years ago? He is a wide receiver with 10 catches for 101 yards.
DEFENSE
The Commanders give up 24.7 ppg, which is second most in the league.
Joel Lanning (Iowa State) is their leading tackler with 12 solos and 3 assists. DB De’Vante Bausby has a pair of interceptions and is second in tackles.
Iron (3-0):
OFFENSE
Birmingham is led by RB Trent Richardson and his league-leading 6 touchdowns. Luis Perez has been solid, completing 60 of 102 for 596 yards with one pick but no TD passes as of yet.
Quinton Patton has 11 catches for 209 yards. Trent is second in receptions at 10-68.
Day late with this, but Blake Sims (hamstring) was placed on IR by the Birmingham Iron, ending his season before he got into a game.

DEFENSE
The big reason the Iron is undefeated is DEEEEFENSE. The Iron Curtain has forced an insane nine turnovers in 12 quarters and allowed 21 points... total. The second best total is 38 by San Diego. Third best is 52 by Orlando.
LB Beniquez Brown (Miss St) has 17 solo tackles, 9 assists, and a sack. DL Jeremy Faulk and LB Jonathan Massaquoi (Troy) both have two sacks each. DB Jamar Summers has two picks.
