It was Claire Jenkins Day as the Crimson Tide faced off against Belmont in the senior shortstop’s hometown of Cullman, Alabama. She did not get the big game-winning hit but she did get plenty of love from the sellout crowd.
Alabama 6 Belmont 4
U-G-L-Y, this was one ugly-ass win. You hate to think this team is getting a little full of themselves and did not respect the Bruins, who at 26-19 are not a terrible team. Superstar Bailey Hemphill was 0 for 3 and had more strikeouts in the game (two) then she did all of last weekend (one). The Tide had only five hits and left 9 runners on base - 5 in scoring position - in six innings of at-bats. Eight Alabama batters struck out. A double by Merris Schroder was the only extra-base hit for the Crimson Tide. On the bright side, Elissa Brown was 1 for 2 with 2 walks, 2 runs, 2 RBI and 3 stolen bases in the lead-off spot. Alabama was the beneficiary of 8 bases on balls and swiped 7 bases.
Pitcher Courtney Gettins (W, 6-2), who has struggled this season, was excellent in the circle, yielding just five hits and only one walk with four strikeouts in five shutout innings. Maybe someone who was at the game (it was not televised) can explain why Gettins was lifted from the game in favor of Sarah Cornell. In the sixth, Cornell walked two, had a wild pitch, and hit a batter but got out of the inning. She was not so lucky in the seventh. The Bruins had a walk, single, double and homer in the seventh to make the Tide sweat. However, Cornell came back with a strikeout to end the threat.
Hopefully, this game was a wake-up call for Alabama as they head into the homestretch.
The Tide gets a weekend visit from the No. 22/23 Kentucky Wildcats (29-18, 12-9) who just swept a three-game series from Auburn by the scores of 7-0, 7-3, 7-0.
