Piper's Ponderings: All the Misses (1st Half)

I had intended to look at every snap by Ole Miss. After spending 15 minutes on their first play from scrimmage; trying to figure out how many guys screwed up, and what they should have been doing, I decided to just focus on the missed tackles.

Additionally, I think there is a problem with angles AND getting off of blocks, so, I may throw some of them in here as well.

And NO, I'm not trying to take Dr.WOF's weekly film study. No gifs here, just links to the replay. Plus, that would take up too much bandwidth trying to gif all of our derps :(

1Q 1:52 First quarter is winding down before we see the first "true" missed tackle by one of our many 5*. Chris Allen has the the edge closest to us, and is focused on the QB. Lets the TE go by without even a chip, for Moses to track. He's blown up a few of these so far this young season, but just appears to be running a bit upright and with trepidation like the field might be an issue (as was mentioned in the game threads by some). Anyhoo, he tries to pull Corral's flag to realize that only flies in the B12. Corral readjusts his junk, and fires a first down throw up the sideline.

1Q 1:28 If you didn't watch the game, or had jumped up to grab a beverage thinking this was just a glitch in the Matrix, well...you didn't have to wait long for the next dose.

#8 Gets the swing pass after motioning in front of the QB. Catches the pass and should have been brought down for a short loss by Battle. Battle, instead chooses to do-si-do with the RB, and gets flung off. LaBryan Ray wants to cut in, but the RB shrugs him off as well, leading to a chain of Benny Hill-type events where Ray picks up the Moses spare and Battle somehow whiffs again, trying to get back to make the tackle.

1Q 1:26 WAOM liked the missed- tackle- chain- reaction to the left so much, the decided to give 'er another go. RB takes the hand-off and Will Anderson MAY have had a small chance to dive and possibly trip him up, but gets pushed past by an OL and doesn't touch him.

Harris appears to underestimate the RB's speed and shows a perfect jump-flail as the RB runs through him with minimal effort. Our buddy Battle has a chance to make amends, and hit the RB just short of the sticks, but, he goes high and the RB spins off and Battle flings him forward for a few more yards and the 1st.

2Q 14:55 Made it to the 2nd Qtr, let's get started on the sh*t tackling again, shall we?

Even though this play was called back for a pick (!!), it's still a great illustration of the "toughness" that is so obviously lacking. WR gets the short-crosser and heads towards the sideline. Battle (pattern here?) comes up from his Safety spot and proceeds to put his mug into the WRs naughty bits without wrapping up. If the play would have stood, that busted tackle got them another 5 yds.

2Q 14:18 This is the busted draw play that went forever, and seemed to be the theme of the night. RB isn't touched for however many yards, before running deep into "sure-tackling" Safetyland. D. Wright is angled behind the umpire, and forces the RB toward Hellams, who is running parallel and attempts to dive at his legs, only to slide off. Battle is there to clean up the play, but puts his shoulder into him and sees another ball-carrier carom off to Harris who shows Battle what a proper form tackle looks like.

2Q 9:58

This one seems more of a "know your assignment" miss, as Chris Allen comes off the edge towards a developing mesh point going right. Corral keeps and spins away. Allen bites for a split second; enough to give the QB the bulk of the field for a decent scramble.

Upon further review, Allen had plenty of help if the give stayed with the RB to the right. Harris was spying that side of the field, and the DL had moved their wall evenly that way. I think Allen should have teed off on Corral.

2Q 5:11

Somebody took my advice and told the blitzer to beeline for the QB. I guess since it wasn't on CBS, they didn't have enough time to mention the whole "wrap him up" when they got there.

Corral spins toward Anderson, but then jumps away. He continues right, where he skips and pushes a tackle attempt from Moses into the turf. Turns both these missed tackles into twice the necessary yardage.

2Q 4:07

This isn't a missed tackle, but was REALLY focus on the feet of the players after this (NOT in a creepy Rex Ryan way).

Look at LaBryan Ray's legs on this tackle, as he tries to get traction. I wonder if this wasn't a secret, serious issue for these guys on both sides.

BONUS! Ben Fn Davis and Drew Sanders were in this series and did "not bad" on the edges.

2Q 3:37

C. Harris MAY have attempted a half-assed tackle here, but due to the camera angle, I can't tell what it was. The RB spins away and Drew Sanders shows why he may be getting a lil more PT going forward with a driving tackle near the goal line.

Also, pay attention to M. Moore. He is so focused on the motion going away from the play, that he misses a slight chance to hit the RB in the hole. #LFKn'd

Wow, I'm actually going to have to separate these by halves.

If I'm not too pissed and exhausted, I'll try to take a look at the 2nd half tomorrow.
