Mac Jones is the current Heisman favorite according to Vegas sportsbooks

Who saw this coming?

NCAA Football: Mississippi State at Alabama The Tuscaloosa News-USA TODAY Sports

Last December, I made a tongue-in-cheek case for Mac Jones in the Heisman race vs. Joe Burrow, correctly pointing out that Mac had a higher passer rating as a starting QB, including better ratings vs. two common opponents. Most folks assumed that those numbers were a product of teams selling out to stop the run and forcing Mac to beat them, and that the former three-star would end up serving as a mentor while backing up heralded freshman Bryce Young.

Who among you expected Mac to enter November as the Heisman favorite? Liars. From ESPN’s David Purdum:

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is no longer the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy at multiple sportsbooks.

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has moved into the role of Heisman Trophy favorite at DraftKings, followed closely by Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Jones and Fields are co-favorites at FanDuel’s sportsbook.

There is still plenty of football to be played and Mac will have to keep up this level of performance without Jaylen Waddle, but what an incredible turn of events. Alabama has three of the top five according to oddsmakers, with DeVonta Smith and Najee Harris joining Mac. This is rat poison overload, but also underscores just how ridiculous this offense has been. If the defense is really figuring things out, look out.

Roll Tide.
