Reasons for the Crimson Tide junior’s departure are unclear at this time.

Tyrell Shavers is a rising redshirt junior. In his two seasons at Alabama, he has caught only one pass - a 20-yarder against Western Carolina this past season. He also recorded one rushing attempt for 14 yards against Mississippi State in a 38-7 romp in November.

The hope for the former No. 88 overall player of 2017 was that he could use his 6’6” height to his advantage. With Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III off to the NFL, it was thought that he might find his way into a rotation that often implements four receivers. Unfortunately, the Crimson Tide was denied spring football practice that would’ve helped decipher who might join DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle on the field this fall.

Coincidentally, the editors of Roll Bama Roll were privately discussing the wide receiver depth chart earlier today. The general belief is that Slade Bolden and John Metchie are the leading candidates. Other contenders include RS-sophomore Xavier Williams followed by incoming freshmen Thaiu Jones-Bell and Javon Baker.

The reasons for his departure are unclear at this time. This circumstance does not feel like an “encouraged to look elsewhere” situation. With all that is going on, it is possible he wants to be closer to his hometown of Lewisville, TX outside of Dallas. Shavers also participated some with the Alabama baseball team. Perhaps that is an avenue he would like to pursue.

If Shavers stays true to his decision, the Tide will be at an unofficial roster count of 88.
