A recruit with a very familiar name has pledged his commitment to Alabama.
Smith is only rated three stars at this point, the #30 CB and #400 overall player, but you have to think that he will be moving up with committable offers to both Ohio State and Alabama. He has good size at 6’0” and 185 lb. and is the second player this cycle that the Buckeyes thought they had locked up only to see him commit to Alabama.
Smith’s timeline shares some similarities with five-star offensive lineman JC Latham in terms of how they ended up as Alabama commits. While Latham was never committed to the Buckeyes, he spent much of his recruitment crystal-balled to Columbus before things suddenly turned in the Crimson Tide’s favor. In less than a week, Latham went from a potential Buckeyes lock to being an unanimous prediction for Alabama. In Smith’s case, he’d gone from a potential lock, to committed, to flipping to the Crimson Tide.
Time will tell if Charles Huff and Karl Scott have found a diamond in the rough here.
Congratulations, Devonta and Roll Tide.
