When Ole Miss traveled to Tuscaloosa on September 28, 2019, there wasn’t much reason for intrigue outside of the two respective fanbases. Ole Miss coach Matt Luke was on the hot seat coming off a 1-7 SEC mark in 2018 while Alabama was once again expected to compete for a national title. This game was programmed to be your run-of-the-mill Alabama blowout.
Fortunately, DeVonta Smith decided to spice it up a little.
The Slim Reaper put on an unbelievable show, catching 11 balls for 274 yards and five touchdowns. Both the receiving yards and touchdowns broke school records. As hard as it is to remember now, Smith was the #3 receiving option on that 2019 squad, so this explosion came out of nowhere but should have given us an inkling of what was to come.
All 11 of his grabs from that day are shown below. What a player.
We are now 5 days from kickoff.
Roll Tide.
