So that's what 4 quarters looks like. Looking at the SR by Drive graph there are a lot of lovely crimson bars aka TD drives, 6 of them in fact and only 5 grey non scoring drives. Of those non scoring drives one was a one play drive right before the half and the two non scoring drives in the second half were time killing end of game drives.

While I still am not sure how to interpret the mean SR by Drive, μ_SR, I know that a μ_SR(game) = 0.567 is good especially when compared to μ_SR(season) = 0.366. As I mentioned in a comment to balloons article, https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2023/10/23/23928199/graphing-the-tide-vs-tennessee-second-halves-and-red-zones-yet-again?_gl=1*1gprbbn*#comments, maybe it is a measure of consistency across the game when compared to the game SR. If so then comparing μ_SR(game) = 0.567 to our SR = 0.536 looks pretty good.

For comparison, LSU's μ_SR(game) = 0.5 and SR = 0.509. I continued to feel like they were a major threat until Daniels was unfortunately injured on what looked like a legal tackle to me. Overall we had a few lower SR drives and a few higher SR drives and they seemed to be pretty consistent as seen in the table below. Playing with the numbers a bit we had a differential of μ_SR(game) - SR = 0.567 - 0.536 = 0.031 and they had a differential of μ_SR(game) - SR = 0.500 - 0.509 = -0.009. Looking at their past games it is interesting that their lowest mean SR by Drive was against Missouri which they beat and their highest SR was against Ole Miss who beat them. I've not had time to watch them this year so I don't know what to make of these numbers.

I am (slowly) rerunning our old games and looking at Distance to 1st/TD, Yards gained statistics to see if there is any meaningful information here. Our distance to 1st/TD median going from 10=>6=>5.5=>0 is more of what my intuition says should happen if you are playing consistently well. Theirs went from 10=>7=>9=>4 and yet they seemed to be moving the ball just fine until Daniels injury.

Looking at the SR by Distance to 1st/TD facted by downs below, second down looks like what you would expect to happen as you get farther from you goal, decreasing success rates. But on third down we have a high SR from 1-3 yards out and then after dropping from 1.000 to 0.500 our SR increases the further we were from a 1st/TD back to 1.000 in the 10-12 yard distance.

Interestingly... or not, all of LSU's touchdowns came on first down plays. Two were in the 1-3 yard range, one in the 7-9 yard range, and one in the 10-12 yard range.

As to penalties, we were called for 7 penalties with 6 enforced. The false start at 1:28 of the second quarter was clearly offsides on LSU. The frame below is the moment that we move and there is no way his hand isn't in the neutral zone given the location of his foot.

The roughing the passer was horrible. It wasn't targeting and it wasn't late and maybe if 66 hadn't been holding Daniels wouldn't have been injured. It should be concerning that LSU's medical staff missed a head injury and if it hadn't been for a penalty and then needing to take a timeout he would possibly been hit again.

The SEC calls on average more penalties than any other conference. Is this because players in the SEC commit more penalties or do the refs just call more? Can't tell from the data, but I did want to put it out there.

Within the SEC we are below the average, in fact 9th, with a z-score of -0.31. Tennessee is still the most penalized team (z-score = 2.05) and Georgia is the least (z-score = -2.12). The next closest to Tennessee is South Carolina at z-score = 0.93! That's one heck of a jump, but I am reasonably sure my code is correct. I'd like to find how Heupel's teams have historically ranked in terms of penalties, but they were neck and neck with us last year so I'm not totally surprised. Vandy's z-score = -1.55 so there isn't as big of a jump down at that end.
