In a tale of two halves, Alabama won going away over South Carolina,
Alabama’s play in the first ten minutes of this one was absolutely disgusting. The only shot they could get off was a contested three, and shooting those was the only time they weren’t turning the ball over. Give South Carolina credit for high effort on defense, but sloppy doesn’t begin to describe Alabama offensively. Fortunately for the Tide, South Carolina isn’t a great offensive squad, though they did destroy Alabama on the offensive glass.
Somehow, Alabama managed to take a one point lead into the locker room at 30-29 thanks to Mark Sears catching fire for 15 of his game high 31 points on 72% shooting. For most everyone else, it was about as ugly a winning half as one could imagine.
Fortunately, whatever Nate Oats said at halftime seemed to work. The Tide came out in the second half with better defensive energy, forced some turnovers, and got out in transition. The result was a 13-0 run over the first six minutes that had Alabama up 43-29. From there, Alabama just flat out dominated. They were having fun, crashing the offensive glass. moving the ball... it was night and day.
The Gamecocks didn’t help themselves by going ice cold, and in the end it was a laugher. An Alabama team that has been pretty bad defensively for most of the year held the Gamecocks to 18 second half points.
This game was kind of a microcosm of the season so far. When this team is on, they can beat anyone in the nation but they go through some awful funks at times.
In any case, they now sit at 2-0 in SEC play. Hopefully they can build on that second half and go on a run.
