I think it is safe to say that National Signing Day was a resounding success for the program. How good of a day was it? Judge for yourself.

To help us all familiarize ourselves with these new members of the Crimson Tide, we have been running this Better Know Your Bama Recruits series. In previous installments, we covered the early enrollees, the defense, and the offense. This week, we'll wrap up the profile coverage with a review of the big names that made their decisions on or right around National Signing Day.

Jacob Coker QB Mobile, AL 6'5" 230 lbs

Though he didn't actually sign a letter of intent, Coker is considered to be part of the 2014 signing class. His transfer from Florida State to Alabama was probably one of the more discussed stories over the last couple of months. As a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining, Coker will not have to sit out a year and will be immediately eligible to take the helm as the Tide's signal caller after he graduates from FSU. There's no need to dance around it, Coker is our quarterback. If he isn't, something has gone terribly wrong.

Here is some tape of Coker playing in 2013. Bear in mind that he is playing behind a second string offense and throwing to second string targets in this tape, so an honest evaluation is a bit difficult. It's clear that Coker has a heck of an arm, and he looks more durable than any other QB we've had under Saban, but he does seem to take a few more risks than we're accustomed to seeing. Saban will have to beat that out of him, if there is any hope of approaching the level of ball security that we had under McCarron.

The happy surprise of National Signing Day. An Auburn native, and the son of two former Auburn athletes, this signing should have never happened. It's just too hard to steal a legacy player. And then Kirby Smart showed up at a family party, cut a rug, and stole Auburn's best recruit right out of their backyard.

Ordinarily, this is the part where I break down the recruit, but SB Nation did a scouting report on Evans, and I really like Bud's take, so I'll just point you to Evans' highlight video and drop this quote here.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: Evans is a really special player. He has excellent quickness off the football. He has the frame to eventually play at north of 250 pounds. He has great length to keep opposing blockers out of his breast plate. He has excellent lateral agility and the ability to strafe down the line while keeping his shoulder pads square. He has a good balance, keeping a solid football position, which allows him to play blocks with power, even against much bigger defenders. And he is surprisingly good in pass coverage considering he plays defensive end in high school.

Evans is just a fun defender to evaluate. There are really no true weaknesses in his game. I think he should play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, as it will allow him to rush the passer a lot, but also play in space.

Marlon Humphrey CB Hoover, AL 6'0" 175 lbs

Speaking of legacy players... Humphrey's father is a name that a few people may have heard of, but Marlon was a huge target in his own right. An elite athlete that was clearly one of the best cornerbacks in the class, Humphrey was a must have.

There really is no end to the praise you could heap on this kid. As a cornerback, he's clearly the real deal. He can jam at the line, then turn and run with anybody. He does a great job of getting his head around and locating the ball, and does a fine job of fighting off blocks and playing solid run support. Long story short, this is our star cornerback of the future. I really don't think I'm exaggerating when I say Marlon has the potential that when he leaves (in three years, let's be honest) he could be the best cornerback out of Bama during this run.

The crazy thing? As high as I am on him as a cornerback, he's even better as a punt returner. Watch his highlight film and tell me your jaw didn't drop during some of those returns. The options we now have for punt returner are ridiculous.

On a broader note, Humphrey will also be on the Tide track team (where he'll join fellow five star '14 cornerback signee Tony Brown). These are big gets for the track program as well, and if you're interested in that, you should check out this article about Marlon as a track athlete. If you aren't interested in that kind of thing, check it out anyways for the video of Marlon overcoming a massive deficit when he starts his leg of a 4x400 meter relay race (jump to the 4 minute mark) to win the race for his team. It's pretty remarkable.

Ty Flournoy-Smith TE Milledgeville, GA 6'3" 245 lbs

One of the very last pieces in the 2014 signing class puzzle, Flournoy-Smith joins the Crimson Tide by way of Georgia Military College. Flournoy-Smith originally signed with the University of Georgia in 2012, but left the program in May 2013, on the heels of a couple of run ins with the law.

His play doesn't leave a lot to analyze (he only played in 6 games in 2013 at GMC, but he did have 6 catches for 5 touchdowns), so we're probably going to have to take a bit of a "wait and see" approach with this signee.

--

And that will wrap up our profile series. Please be sure to check out our previous entries, and stay tuned as we start to evaluate what impact these new signees will have.

What the world is saying about Alabama and Nick Saban the day after they hauled in the highest ranked class in the recruiting modern era.

Saban will reserve his own class rankings until the players have proven themselves on the field. "I really do think that the most accurate way to be able to rank any recruiting class would be three years down the road," he said. This one certainly looks impressive with seven five-star recruits and seven Parade All-Americans plus Florida State transfer quarterback Jake Coker. Alabama got the top-rated prospect in Alabama, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

"They got a stud at every single position," said Greg Biggins, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. "There's not one single area that they didn't fill with an impact type of kid. They can recruit nationally unlike anyone right now. They're on a different level."

Winning a national championship in the BCS era required nearly as much luck as it did talent, as the Crimson Tide can well attest. In 2011 and '12, Alabama was fortunate that enough other contenders lost in November to allow it to climb back into the top two. In '13, however, the Crimson Tide were unfortunate enough to be on the wrong end of the first-ever game-winning touchdown return of a missed field goal -- the dramatic 109-yard scamper by Auburn's Chris Davis. 'Bama is often favored to win titles, but only the most diehard Tide fan could annually expect something so inherently capricious.

And as usual, most of the Southeastern Conference got glittering grades from the experts. None better than Alabama. The Crimson Tide sat atop the rankings for Rivals, Scout, 247sports and ESPN. Alabama signed six of 33 players given five-star ratings by Rivals, including Rashaan Evans, a linebacker from Auburn High School who didn’t decide to roll with the Tide until Wednesday, passing joining his hometown Tigers. No other school had more than three five-stars. "He kind of lapped the field," Tom Lemming of CBS Sports Network said about Saban.

While FSU landed the top class in the state and one of the best in the country, it and everyone else lagged far behind consensus top-ranked Alabama. "They're the best in the country," Nee said. "And it's not close." The Crimson Tide had Rivals' and 247Sports' No. 1 class each of the past four seasons, but this was the most decorated class of coach Nick Saban's career. Alabama gained six five-star talents in a class Rivals national recruiting director Mike Farrell called, "historically good." Alabama picked up the country's top recruit (defensive end Da'Shawn Hand) plus the No. 1 offensive tackle, No. 1 center and No. 2 athlete. The coronation became complete after the nation's No. 1 linebacker, Rashaan Evans, announced on national television he would sign with the Tide — even though he went to Auburn High School and his dad played for the rival Tigers. "To go in and get a legacy out of Auburn, that's a message," Farrell said.

All told, Alabama signed a college football best 19 ESPN 300 athletes, the most since Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2007. His first recruiting class finished a lackluster 17th nationally, according to ESPN. But given a full calendar year to crisscross the recruiting trail, Saban and his staff thrived. From 2008 on, Alabama never failed to finish lower than third in the ESPN Class Rankings, becoming the only program in the country to do so. "I've never heard anybody say they've had a bad class," Saban said. "I've never heard anybody say they haven't identified their needs. "So I'm going to say the same thing: We had a good class and we sort of identified our needs."

Alabama lost out on a chance of winning its third consecutive BCS national championship when its perfect season was ended by Auburn in the Iron Bowl, a performance which was followed up by a lackluster showing in a loss to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, but the Crimson Tide have wasted no time in attempting to correct their late-season woes and get back to being the cream of the crop. Of the Tide's initial 25 commitments, they have locked down five five-star recruits, according to Rivals.com (only four other programs were able to nab more than one).

Roll Bama Roll provides updates as recruits sign their letters of intent and officially join the 2014 recruiting class.

Alright, folks. The time has come for the parade of the committed to officially bind themselves to the university. While NSD may be a bit of a quiet affair today, the quality of this class should not be underestimated. I've gotten the sense that many in the fan base are feeling blasé due to an expected general lack of breaking news. Make no mistake, this class has the potential to be as good or better than any class ever signed at Bama. The fact that such a historic class could potentially be assembled with little to no signing day theatrics is a testament to this Bama staff.

Alabama currently has 26 commitments and may potentially sign 1-2 additional players when all is said and done. Here are a few notable announcements that we will be keeping our eyes on today:

Don't get me wrong, I love watching 'Bama haul in another crop of elite players but there just doesn't seem to be the same buzz as in years' past. #BamaProblems

This just in: Alabama has picked up the commitment of another 5 star corner in this recruiting class in Marlon Humphrey.

Thanks for everyone that has supported me this far I'm happy to say I am committed to the University of Alabama!! #RollTide
— Fruit PUNCH (@marlon_humphrey) January 29, 2014

Speculation on whether the son of the Alabama legend would choose Bama or FSU has surrounded his recruitment ever since he was given the nickname "Florida State" during Under Armour All-star practices. Well, with this tweet it looks like he's finally made up his mind.

It goes without saying that Alabama picking up at least two elite corners in this class was a high priority for the Alabama coaching staff and it looks like that goal has been firmly met. Both Tony Brown and Marlon Humphrey look the part and should solidify the Alabama defensive backfield for at least the next three seasons.

With Humphrey's commitment Alabama now has 25 commitments for this year's class but there are rumors floating around this morning that three star DT O.J. Smith out of Bossier City, LA may not be able to qualify. He's set to visit Mississippi State this weekend, giving at least some credence to the rumors.

Anyways, welcome aboard Marlon and Roll Tide!

National Signing Day is now less than two weeks away.

We have already covered two installments in our Better Know Your Bama Recruits series: the early enrollees, and the defense. This week, we'll be looking at the offensive recruits, and next week we'll wrap up the profile coverage with a review of the big names that are still floating out there before national signing day.

Remember that all verbal commitments are non-binding, and these players are free to change their mind at any time up until and including signing day.

NOTE: Rivals position rank database seems to have crashed. The first two players' rankings are correct, but the rankings were not available for the others at the time that I published this article. If Rivals gets their rankings up shortly, I will update accordingly.

Joshua Casher C Mobile, AL 6'1" 300 lbs

Though he is classified as a center by all of the recruiting services, his high school highlight tape shows Casher playing pretty much everything but. By playing left guard, right guard, and right tackle, Casher demonstrates a flexible utility that can often come in handy (perhaps for Casher's sake, this is more the case than usual, given the depth of the OL in Bama's signing class this year (more on that later)). At only 6'1", Casher will certainly be an interior lineman, and his highlight tape may leave you reminiscing about another interior lineman that had a penchant for baring his belly. This kid is a strong, road-grader type blocker, and more often than not, it seemed his target ended up on the ground. Check out his highlight tape for yourself, and let me know what you think.

J.C. Hassenauer C St Paul, MN 6'3" 295 lbs

So about that offensive line depth... somehow, Saban has managed to land the top two centers in the same class. Some things just shouldn't be possible, and this feat is on that list. Unlike Casher, Hassenauer's highlight tape does show him playing center. I'm not sure that there's much to say about this kid, other than his ranking seems to be well deserved. He gets into his stance quickly, and then stones rushers on pass plays, or drives his man on run plays. Here is his highlight tape. Be sure to check out the :50 second mark, when he drives his man 10 yards down field. We're early into this list yet, but Casher and Hassenauer alone have to make you feel pretty good about the future of the interior of the offensive line.

Dominick Jackson OT San Mateo, CA 6'7" 300 lbs

Jackson is a bit of an interesting case. As a JUCO player, Jackson had the option to sign weeks ago, and didn't. The rumors were that there were it was some potential academic snags that were a sticking point. Saban had an in-home visit with Jackson yesterday, and all reports seem to indicate that Saban was bearing good news on the academic front. If eligible, Jackson should immediately provide a viable option at the left tackle position. Here is his highlight tape.

Mr. Media. To my knowledge, Kief is the only commit in this class with his own website (creatively named www.derekkief.com). If self promotion is the kind of thing that puts you off, be sure to note that the site was created and is maintained by his uncle, who is understandably proud. Kief isn't going to blow you away with his speed, but at 6'4", he does provide a big target. He has also great hands, and does a nice job of high pointing the ball and catching away from his body. Check out one of his highlight tapes here.

Montel McBride OL Plant City, FL 6'4" 330 lbs

Here we have yet another strong interior lineman. McBride is a big kid that plays strong and looks like he'll be a run-blocking terror. One negative on him is he seems to rely a ton on power and plays with heavy feet when pass blocking, which could be a problem against quicker defensive tackles. Here's his highlight tape.

Ross Pierschbacher OT/OG Cedar Falls, IA 6'4" 290 lbs

Another prospect, another big time offensive lineman. Noticing a trend yet? Ross (I'm not typing that last name multiple times) does a nice job in both run blocking and pass protection, but he seems to have a tendency to end up on the ground. I can't tell if this is a balance issue where he has trouble keeping his feet, or if he's just basically tackling his guy half the time, but either way, he'd be better served staying upright more often. Overall, Ross looks like a solid tackle prospect, and he should be right in the mix when the right tackle spot opens up in 2015. Here is his highlight tape.

Bo Scarbrough ATH Tuscaloosa, AL 6'2" 225 lbs

Bo is a big get. He's an extremely athletic guy, that many consider to be capable of playing either running back or wide receiver at the collegiate level. While his speed and route running skills are both very good, from some footage that I've seen, his hands are just adequate. Watching him play running back, though is something else altogether. Scarbrough runs with speed, power, fluidity, and an elusiveness that belies his size. It will be interesting to see what role Bo can play this year, as Bama has a bit of a logjam at running back presently. In some ways, a redshirt year may make sense due to the depth chart, but at the same time, it will be hard to keep a guy like this on the sidelines. Get a drool napkin, and check out his highlight tape.

Though his classified as a kicker for his recruiting rankings, Scott is likely the answer to the age old question "Who will replace Cody Mandell?" I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a look at kicker, though, as he seems to have a heck of a leg. His highlight film includes him coming just short of making a field goal from his own 40 yard line (that's 70 yards, folks).
As we continue the slow march towards national signing day (February 5th), it's time for another look at the recruits that have committed to sign with the Crimson Tide in three weeks.

Last week, we brought you the first installment in our Better Know Your Bama Recruits series: the early enrollees. This week, we'll be looking at the defensive recruits, and next week we'll be looking at the offensive recruits. Then we'll wrap up the profile coverage with a review of the big names that are still floating out there before national signing day.

Remember that all verbal commitments are non-binding, and these players are free to change their mind at any time up until and including signing day.

Ronnie Clark ATH Calera, AL 6'3" 205 lbs

Ronnie played a number of positions in high school, including linebacker and wide receiver, but he projects as a safety at the next level. Watching his tape, Clark isn't going to blow you away with his speed. He's a bit of a lumbering runner, taking big strides and often picking his way through traffic, rather than bursting through a seam. His tackling form is decent, but there are a number of times where he seem to set his feet early, and ends up reaching to make the tackle. All of those minor critiques aside, Clark does have the build to be a physical presence in the defensive backfield, and could very well be the answer for the strong safety position in '15. Here's his YouTube highlight film.

Johnny Dwight DT Rochelle, GA 6'3" 298 lbs

A couple of things jump out when you watch Dwight: he is big and he is strong. Johnny does a good job of attacking blockers, and doesn't give up ground, even to double teams. Projecting for the next level, he looks like he will be a dynamite run stuffer. He doesn't seem to have great moves or speed for getting penetration, so I don't expect him to make a large impact in the passing game, but he has the potential to be a brick wall on the line. Here is his YouTube tape.

Josh Frazier DT Springdale, AR 6'3" 334 lbs
(via SB Nation Recruiting)

Just like Johnny Dwight, Josh Frazier is big and strong. Unlike Dwight, Frazier seems to get decent penetration, especially considering he's getting this production from the defensive tackle position. Whether bull rushing one on one blocks, using his power to split a double team or swim-moving his way into the backfield, Frazier demonstrates a combination of power and speed that doesn't come around everyday. Already at 330+ pounds, Frazier should be the nose guard of the future. Here is his highlight reel.

Da'Shawn Hand DE Woodbridge, VA 6'4" 265 lbs

The last time we saw Da'Shawn Hand, he was breaking Michigan's heart. They were right to be upset, though, as Hand is a bona fide, can't miss, this kid will rule the world-type star. Hand looks like a video game create-a-player in his highlight tape. I apologize for the effusive praise, but it's hard not to get excited about this kid. The combination of raw physical abilities and smarts that he possesses is truly rare.

Da'Shawn may legitimately be the best pass rusher Nick Saban has ever recruited to Bama, and if you had to pick one player in this class that will have the biggest impact his freshman year, he would be my pick. Here are a couple highlight tapes - a general one, and one with a lower quality that shows Hand making some devastating hits.

Keith Holcombe OLB Tuscaloosa, AL 6'4" 210 lbs

Keith Holcombe is a somewhat lightly regarded recruit (as evidenced by his Rivals non-ranking). Watching his tape, it's partially understandable. Keith has good, but not amazing, speed, and he's awfully thin. Projecting him a couple years down the road with some weight on him, though, there's definitely some promise here. The one thing that stands out is that Keith plays with good technique. He handles blocks well, strings out wide runs, does a decent job in pass coverage, and makes good form tackles. This will be a guy to keep an eye on in '16/'17. Here is his highlight tape.

Almost universally regarded as the best outside linebacker in this class, Christian Miller has a bit of a pedigree. His dad played for the Gamecocks in the early '90s, then had a nine-year career in the NFL. Honestly, when I watch his tape, the thing that impresses me most about Miller is his motor. His speed/tackling/play-making skills are all good, but this kid plays with so much energy it will make you tired just watching him.
Given his dimensions, the first description of Smith that comes to mind is "space eater", and while that certainly isn't inaccurate, neither is it sufficient. Smith does a good job of controlling his blocker, pushing him into traffic on run plays, or beating him outright to rush the passer on pass plays. While a guy this big is never going to have great speed, Smith does show a nice burst at the line, and there were times in his tape that he caught a guy much smaller than him in pursuit. Considering the depth we will have on the defensive line next year, it may be too much to expect him to get playing time in his freshman campaign, but he should be a valuable addition to the rotation after a redshirt year.
This is an interesting one for me. The only highlight tape I could find for Williams had him labeled as a safety, but then went on to show him pretty much exclusively on offense/special teams. There was only one play on the reel that showed Williams playing defense (at the 2:50 mark), and it's nothing spectacular. He comes unblocked against a quarterback and basically just holds on for dear life.

Here's what I know from the tape: the kid has speed and he is really good in space. I wouldn't be surprised if he's our punt returner/kick returner of the future. But as a safety? I would imagine he's a bit away from that. At only 180 pounds, he needs to gain at least 20 pounds before he's a legitimate option there. It's possible he was recruited with an eye at putting him at cornerback, but without any tape to evaluate his hips/coverage skills, I'm not really in a position to comment on the viability of that option.
